Every Self is divided and each includes contradictions that can never be settled once and for all. The opposing aspects of our personalities remain in an uneasy state of tension.
Within every one of us, there are the polarities of masculinity and femininity, reason and imagination, and individual needs and a sense of social responsibility. In addition, we have to come to terms with simultaneously possessing both higher spiritual consciousness and base biological instincts.
These dilemmas are too troubling to be faced head-on all the time. Fortunately, self-awareness fluctuates enough for us to periodically escape the strain of coping with so much internal contradiction.
Still, we eventually have to get a clear concept of who we are or we will never feel in charge of ourselves.
We cannot do what can’t be done, but still we must do what we can.
