When the unexpected occurs, we\u2019re caught unaware, and if some particularly sensitive, intimate, or vulnerable aspect of ourselves is exposed, the pain is intense. The discrepancy between the completely coping person we assume we are and whom we hope others assume we are is now exposed as a blundering, vulnerable incompetent.<\/p>\n

For that moment, all bets are off. Trust of self and others is in jeopardy. All values are once again in question. We begin to think: \u201cAm I an adequate human being or a fool? What can I expect of myself? Do I really know what I am doing?\u201d<\/p>\n

We also feel compelled to question trust in the others who have witnessed our major-league blunder. Trust is the focus, especially when the embarrassment arises in the context of the rejected gift, the joke, or the phrase that does not come off: \u201cAre these witnesses truly my friends? How do they really feel about me? If they once thought me capable, have they now lost faith in my abilities? I am left feeling helpless.\u201d<\/p>\n
