\"BluesAintNothingBookCover\"<\/a>When we\u2019ve buried our natural impulses and put a hold on our spontaneous feelings, we are not likely to have much fun. Nor are we likely to be much fun. Our humorless, effortful self-conscious manner leaves little space for lightness or spontaneity. Dignified and deliberate, we avoid or ignore our own simplest wishes for pleasure as temptations we don\u2019t deserve. We try to behave as we\u2019ve been taught we should. We dare not do as we please. We might lose control, or even go crazy. Then everything could fall apart.<\/p>\n

Paradoxically, the more we use our energy to maintain the illusion of being in control, the less in charge of our lives we actually are. With whatever energy remains, we try to match our attempts at keeping external order with an illusion of inner certainty. If only we carefully considered every alternative, says our imagination, then we could be sure that everything would turn out perfectly.<\/p>\n
