\"BluesAintNothingBookCover\"<\/a>Though certain kinds of pretending may lead to neurotic character styles, pretending is by no means destructive in and of itself. Creative pretending in form of fantasy and daydreaming gives us pleasure, excitement, relief, and even hope. And pretending can provide a way of filling personal needs at times and in places where we would otherwise have to do without. Each culture provides sanctioned ways of pretending that take people beyond the frustrations of everyday life- experiences such as the enthrallment of the theater and the grandeur of ceremony.<\/p>\n

Pretending also mines the mother lode of our imaginations. In fantasy we may find inspiration for new ways to live. In reflection we can even work through practical plans, avoiding much wasted trial-and-error bungling. In daydreaming we may visualize future actions, rehearsing so that we can approach the situations with less fear and more grace.<\/p>\n
